Bachelor's Education

I would obtain a Bachelor's degree in General Biology/Biological Sciences.

Stanford students pursuing any kind of Bachelor's needs a minimum of 180 credits to graduate.

Requirements for B.S. in Biology:

1. Three lecture courses:

  • BIO 41 (Biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics)
  • BIO 42 (Cell Biology and Animal Physiology)
  • BIO or BIOHOPK 43 (Plant Biology, Ecology, and Evolution)
2. Two lab courses:

  • BIO 44X (molecular biology lab)
  • BIO or BIOHOPK 44Y (Eco-Evo Lab).
3. Required foundational Breadth Courses:

  • CHEM 31A and 31B or 31X (Chemical principles)
  • CHEM 33 or CHEM 1 (Structure and Reactivity)
  • CHEM 35 or CHEM 2 (Organic Monofuctional Compounds)
  • CHEM 36 (Organic Chemistry Laboratory) or CHEM 1L (Intro to Chem lab)
  • CHEM 2L (Organic Lab 1)
  • CHEM 130(Organic Chemistry Lab II) or CHEM 2L(Organic Lab 2) and 3L(Organic Lab 2)
  • CHEM 131 or CHEM 3 (Organic Polyfunctional Compounds)
  • CHEM 135 (Physical Chemical Principles) or 171 (Physical Chemistry)
  • PHYSICS 21, 22 (Mechanics and Heat w/ Lab)
  • 23, 24 (Electricity and Optics w/ Lab) or 41 (Mechanics)
  • 43 (Electricity and Magnetism)
  • 45 (Light and Heat) or 28 (Mechanics, Heat, and Electricity).
  • 29 (Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, Modern Physics)
  • MATH 19, 20, 21 or 41, 42 (Calculus) or 51 (Linear Algebra and Differential Calculus of Several Variables)
4. Electives - students may take up to 6 elective units CR/NC.

Stanford accepts AP credits with scores of 4-5. I am currently taking one AP class and plan to take more next year.
- For the credits to transfer, the student must score at least a 4 on the AP test for the subject. Then they must submit their test score to the Academics office at the school.

Year 1: Math 19, 20, 21 Physics 21,22, Chem 31A-B, BIO 44X,
Year 2: Math 51, Physics 23, 24, Chem 135, 131, 130, BIO, BIO 42
Year 3: Physics 45, Chem 33, 35, BIO 41, Physics 43
Year 4: Chem 2L, 36, BIOHOPK 43, Physics 29
